What are ad breaks?
Ad breaks help eligible video creators earn money by including short ads before or during qualifying videos. Creators will get a share of the revenue from the video ads shown to viewers. Viewers must view the entire ad to continue watching a video. Because different advertisers target different types of people, each viewer may see a different ad during the same ad break.
There are three types of ad breaks today:
- Pre-roll ads: Ads that play before your video starts. These are shown to people who actively seek out the content either by search, on a Page timeline, or on the Watchlist in Watch. The more viewers that seek out the content, the more payouts the creator will receive from pre-roll.
- Mid-roll ads: Ads that play during your video. These work the best within a video that has natural break points. Today, the vast majority of videos are still discovered in News Feed. To take advantage of all monetization opportunities, we recommend that creators program their content for mid-roll.
- Image ads: This type of ad is a static image that shows up below the content and doesn't impact the viewing experience.

What videos work best with ad breaks?
Ad breaks help you get rewarded for doing what you love. Aim to create loyal and habitual behavior from your fans and adjust your videos to work well for ad breaks. To optimize your videos for ad breaks, make sure to create content that captivates your viewers and makes them want to come back to watch more. Ensure your videos are 3 minutes or longer and contain natural breaks or a cliffhanger at the 1 minute and 5-6 minute mark.
- Do: Leverage your eligibility insights in Creator Studio Monetization settings to monitor your content quality and standards. Ensure your status remains as 'eligible' and doesn't drift into 'at risk' or 'non-eligible' states.
- Don't: Engage in behaviors that involve inauthentic sharing. For example, don't work with companies that promise to share your videos in ways that are not authentic.
How do I insert ad breaks?
Inserting an ad break into your videos is a quick and easy way to earn money with your videos. You can either select the placements yourself, or turn on the auto-insertion feature, where Facebook automatically selects the best placement for the ads in your videos.
A well-placed ad break can have a positive impact on your payouts. There are two ways to place them into a new or existing video:
- Automatic placement: We recommend automatic placement to maximize your earnings. This feature automatically detects the ideal place for an ad break within an eligible video. Facebook's system tries to determine the best placements for ads in your videos based on where each individual viewer is watching. This works best when your content is editorially set up to accommodate an ad break.
- Choose placement: This method lets you decide exactly where you'd like to add in an ad break. Try inserting an ad break right after a cliffhanger to keep the audience on the edge of their seat to keep watching. If you choose multiple placements, viewers will see ads in different places, depending on when they last watched an ad. Be intentional about how you do this, so it's a positive viewer experience.

Go the extra mile: sharing content
Want ways to bring new fans to your Facebook content? Well, as cheesy as the saying is, sharing is caring. One way to introduce potential new fans is by sharing your videos on other social media platforms. Consider creating teaser clips, behind-the-scenes extras, bloopers or interviews to post on other platforms and drive people back to your Facebook Page.
Here are some other things you can try:
- Share fun, exclusive content on your Facebook Page. This will drive your fans from other places specifically to your Page and can help fuel your following.
- Consider collaborating with another creator, especially one whose audience may be interested in your videos, and share each other's videos to your own Pages. Alternatively, team up with someone totally different and reach new viewers!
- Appear as a guest or have a guest in your video to create buzz between your audiences.
- Share your new videos in the comments of older-yet-related, popular videos.
